lila | dallas newborn photographer

so I’ll be honest. I was totally overwhelmed with where to start in blogging my client sessions…. so I chose this one. a very favorite from 2012. and you may have seen this first image since it’s on the homepage of my site…the emotion + connection to her baby just gets to me. this would be the gorgeous (wow.  really…to look like that after giving birth!??) Jennifer Cusimano. a BRILLIANT newborn photographer based in Houston. talk about pressure!! Jenn and I became friends awhile ago. we had some mutual connections + ya know, the whole photography thing…then we finally got to meet in person at a Pinkle Toes Workshop out in Austin. oh my goodness what a blast…not to mention the incredible learning experience, but so awesome is the fact that we stayed up late talking about everything imaginable + we became friends for life, along with some other special ladies. I’m so fortunate to have her friendship and it’s been amazing to watch Jenn become a mommy for the second time around. she calls Miss Lila her ‘miracle baby’ and I absolutely loved spending the day with them last September. it felt so comfortable and natural to hang out with their family. there are more images than a ‘typical’ newborn session because I did spend a lot of time in their lovely home + Jenn’s outrageous studio.  I couldn’t get enough of that space.  there were WAY too many favorites and this is narrowed down a lot!! enjoy the beauty that is Jenn’s family! oh and my shoes even make an appearance…big sis Kinley was really liking them!

see my approach to newborn photography here + purchase actions that I’ve used in my editing here.

so honored to also have some of the above images featured in the jan/feb issue of click magazine!!  do you have your subscription yet?

thanks so much for stopping by the blog:)

Just beautiful Leah! I love how you capture all the little details that are a part of the session as well. You rock!

Stunning Leah! The shot where she is dabbing the tears <3 Ahhhh!

These are beyond gorgeous, Leah!!!! What an incredibly beautiful family. I want to have another baby so that you can come to Kansas City and photograph him/her. :)

Oh gosh, those are absolutely beautiful! I would die for that kind of indoor light – swoon! Gorgeous family and photos, well done all around!

Gorgeous Leah! What a beautiful family Jenn has. Congrats again Jenn! :)

These are just dreamy – I want some just like it. Kudos Leah!

close up portraiture | dallas lifestyle photographer

last year I was very fortunate to participate in a fantastic CMpro blog circle with a group of talented ladies…and we are continuing with it this year as well…yay!!!  we’ve abandoned the the ‘the way I view’ theme (although it was so much fun and I hope you’ll look back through the posts…here’s the last one) and we are challenging ourselves to shoot in ways + subjects we normally wouldn’t.  January was all about ‘close up portraiture’ and I’ve chosen to snap pictures of my oldest son, Andrew, who just turned four.  he was slightly easier to keep still than my two year old;) macro is an area that I struggle with, but I do love experimenting and am happy we got something out of our little ‘session’.  the first is my favorite + since he’s my own I could seriously stare at him all day long.

enjoy! and make sure you hop over to my fellow-texan friend Kelly Garvey’s blog to see her amazing work!!

Good gracious, Leah. Andrew is just beautiful! I love these, but that belly button shot…..ahhhh!!! Gorgeous!

All of these are gorgeous, Leah! Love those big, beautiful brown eyes :)

Oh, Leah, these are absolutely stunning. The first one just makes my heart sing! And the one where you are looking down on his lashes, and the little belly button–GORGEOUS images!

He’s such a handsome boy…I love them all, Leah, and your processing is to die for. <3

Hey great job! You do fantastic work! Mind if I ask how you edited these? Did you use a preset? I love the creamy soft effect!

Beautiful work, Leah! I could stare into that first one for a long time too ;)

These are gorgeous Leah!

cherish | dallas maternity photographer

I’ve picked back up posting on the CMpro daily project + have committed to shooting daily (as much as life will allow it at this point!)  I missed having images of my kiddos of our everyday.  you can see what I’ve posted this last month here in my author archives…but don’t forget to check out the entire blog.  holy smokes there is so much inspiration to be found.

and yesterday…I shared this image.  both on the DP + my facebook page.  and I’m overwhelmed.  it went viral and has reached more than 13,000 people.  I’ve received private messages + heartfelt comments.  I truly believe it’s more than the picture and really about the sentiment behind it. It’s funny how apprehensive I was to post it, and yet here I am again sharing this shot.  what I said yesterday:

“this is uncomfortable for me. I’ve never posted a picture of my bare tummy anywhere…and rarely do I take pictures of others’ bellies like this (even though I think they’re beautiful.) but yesterday I was reminded that not everyone has an easy time conceiving + that women who would love nothing more than to grow a baby in their belly struggle to do so. even my own parents tried for 10 years to get pregnant before I was born, which is why I’m an only child. so today I wanted to do something that pushed my limits…for me to remember how special it is to have a new life growing within me. I cherish the movement of my little one + even accept the uncomfortable-ness that will continue these last few weeks, because another would-be mother might not get this experience.

and I mentioned it on my page, but sweet Ty’s hand was completely spontaneous…he happened to walk by and touch his little brother.  and yes, I’ve been very lucky to avoid stretch marks…I did not photoshop any out;) although I really do have the weirdest belly button ever – it’s completely crooked and way off to the right!!  thank you again for the love and I mean what was said with all my heart.

letters to our sons | january

I had big plans for the images in this ‘letters to our sons‘ post…but the darn cold + rain just would not go away.  sooooo, to celebrate his birthday I’ll take the images I had in mind and post them later!  for now, here’s a letter to my very first baby.  I typed it through tears, remembering back to when he arrived.  you’ll have to forgive the image quality here in the beginning…these are from FOUR YEARS AGO…we all start somewhere, right?;) don’t forget to follow the link at the bottom of this post to make the circle!

you can always go from ‘serious’ to ‘silly’ so fast…I love that about you!

and I just can’t resist adding a *few* mostly recent iPhone snaps!!

next in our blog circle…the always inspiring + one of my very sweet friends, Megan Cieloha…make sure you read her post!

Leah,

Happy Birthday-Jan. 20- Dear One,

A neighbor friend and I were the first ones to see you after your mom and dad. We had prayed and waited on you for so long! What blessing you have been and what talent you have! Soon to be a mommy three times over! Blessing dear one as you welcome this new cutie and love to you’ll and of course your mom and dad!

Oh my, this is so touching and sweet and some points I felt as if I was writing it about my own 3.5 year old. I am dreading 4, but it is SO fun to watch them grow and learn. I think Andrew and Cayson would be the best of friends, although they may get into a debate since Cayson likes to negotiate too and they would never let each other forget ANYTHING! (Where do they learn that from?) Happy Birthday to your sweet first born. His is such a cutie!

beautiful. happy birthday, andrew!!! and happy 4th “becoming a mommy” anniversary, leah. :-)

Kyley

Umm…tears! I’m crying just reading this. I cannot believe he is going to be FOUR!! Oh how I remember finding out you were pregnant and meeting him the first time. Love him…love you…love it all!!

Happy Birthday to Andrew!! I love your words, Leah – and your images (even four years ago) are just beautiful <3

Happy early Birthday to Andrew! It has been so fun to watch him grow on your blog, Leah! <3

Lindsey

I can’t believe Andrew will be four either! Happy birthday, A! We love you!!

They grow up so fast. Lovely words and images, Leah!

I LOVE this!
I love it even more because our two year old is also and ANDREW!
What a fun idea.
Thanks for sharing!

the way I view the holidays | dallas lifestyle photographer

so I’m going to tell you a sad story.  it’s okay, we are fine now…and I wasn’t ABOUT to give up on this way I view project with my fellow CMpros…I have yet to miss a month (miraculously…) and needed to finish it out!  my goal was to post some beautiful pictures from Christmas day – especially of the SNOW we got here.  that’s right, we had a white Christmas here in Dallas…crazy!  but, alas.  I was in bed.  with the stomach flu.  on CHRISTMAS.  I’m yelling.  because really??  oh I was so so sad.  my pictures, all 5 or so of them, are from the same spot on the couch where I was able to sit for just minutes and watch the wrapping paper fly…and the snow was captured with my iPhone, not very well I might add!  even worse, my precious baby boys had it too.  first the big guy – he had it before and missed out on Christmas Eve with his cousins, aunts + uncles and MiMi + Grandpaw.  and then the little guy after the holiday.  we did have a wonderful month full of lights, sparkle, magic and joy.  Nana + Grandad took us on the Polar Express and it was incredible…we are so fortunate they give us that tradition every year.

we are incredibly blessed to have the most amazing family…what fun to watch Christmas through the eyes of my sons.  there are way worse things than missing the actual day and I’m already excited for next year!  see some more holiday here + view our Christmas card.  and if you’re really interested in this project, take a peek back at past months: january, february, march, april, may (probably my favorite!) june, july, august, september, october + november.

and now on to the talented Megan Dill…can’t wait to see how she views the holidays!!

excited to say that this blog circle is continuing…we have fun new themes for 2013, so stick around;)

Love those precious sleeping shots!

oh no Leah!! I’m so sad for all of you :( Glad to hear you have turned a corner but sorry you had to miss out on all the fun (and the white stuff too). Your Letters to Our Sons post still captured so much holiday beauty though. Happy New Year, friend <3

Awww, I am so sorry you were sick! We’ve been battling colds all month (I am on my second–sigh…), but the stomach flu is a thousand times worse… Your images are lovely nonetheless–simply beautiful!

I’m so bummed you were sick on Christmas but it sounds like you had a wonderful month leading up to it. :( And your little guys! :( Here’s to lots of good health in 2013!

Being sick on Christmas is no fun at all :( Glad that you got to squeeze in lots of holiday fun prior to coming down with the bug. I hope that everyone is better and ready for all of the fun that 2013 has to offer! :)

:( Being sick on Christmas is no fun. I’m sure you guys will make up for it in other ways. It looks like you still had a wonderful holiday filled with family love.

Beautiful photos. I, too, view Christmas in much the same way. Hope you’re all feeling better!

Ugh! I’m so sorry that y’all were all so sick!! I love that light on the train and sweet A sleeping. And I’m so happy that our group is still going!!! Love you loads, Leah!! :hp

It’s really not cool to be sick over the holidays, especially with a stomach flu :/ I didn’t know that you could actually take the Polar Express ?! How awesome is that. I really need to visit the US for Christmas one day.
